ABSTRACT

This chapter outlines a Serbian context of national and sexual politics, recalling some key facts from recent Serbian history which are crucial for a better understanding of its cultural specificity. It elaborates more theoretically on the concept of the provincial mind, which is useful in answering the questions about Serbian and European Union (EU) relations, power relations and dualistic thinking. Labris is a lesbian, feminist, non-governmental and non-profit organisation, founded in Belgrade in 1995 with the aim of promoting lesbian rights and visibility in Serbian society. At the present time, Labris is a part of the women's movement, the human rights movement and the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) movement and collaborates with different civil organisations; it is also a member of different networks and coalitions employing women regardless of their sexual orientation. In dominant political and ideological discourses, contemporary Serbian society is most often characterised as a society 'in transition', colloquially named as 'Serbia after democratic changes'.
