ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the key concepts discussed in the preceding chapters of this book. The book deconstructs the idea of Iran and Iranian national identity by focusing on Khatami's presidency and the dynamics of the tenth presidential election and the Green Movement. The ideas of 'complexities of political identity and difference' and 'ideological diversity' are poignant when considering Iran as an actor on the international stage. The book argues that there is a trend in Iranian political culture that indicates a discourse of Iranian civic national identity, albeit somewhat amorphous. In terms of the complexity of political identity on an international level, this research not only illustrates the significance of political identity in Iran's political cultures, but also its significance in Iran's relationship with the 'West'. This is reflected in both the ideologies embedded in Khatami's Islamist-Iranian discourse and the meanings attached to the Iranian nation as articulated by the fluid and unstructured Green Movement.
