ABSTRACT

This chapter describes Singapore's water management story and strategy and how it has evolved from being an issue of national security to a source of economic value and competitive advantage for the tiny city-state. It analyses the structure of Singapore across a number of dimensions or 'capitals' for sustainable competitiveness, including its multi-agency approach for integrated urban planning. The chapter sets forth the city-state's vision and strategy, and how its water management strategy fits into the overarching national strategy. It explores Singapore's water management strategy in detail and illustrates the key features and organising capacities leading to Singapore's success in achieving water sustainability and economic value from new solutions. Singapore has come a long way since its early days of independence to become a well-regarded player in the global knowledge economy. Another initiative aimed at sharing knowledge and profiling Singapore's capabilities is the Singapore International Water Week (SIWW), the global platform for sharing and co-creation of innovative solutions.
