ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a model to help designers to look at their design from the perspective of an offender in a structured way – the Crime Lifecycle. Good-quality housing and facilities designed to reduce crime and antisocial behaviour and promote positive interaction between neighbours can help regenerate problem areas. Design can encourage users to be careful. Designers should think about how they might disrupt the criminal value chain, which means understanding how the offender derives value or reward from the offence. The potential negative impact of design attributes intended to address pre-crime causal factors should be considered, to ensure that the immediate impact for the victim is not inadvertently made worse. Vexed Generation and Central Saint Martin’s College of Art & Design collaborated in the development of Karrysafe – a range of bags designed to fight the four most common bag theft techniques: dip, snatch, lift and slash.
