ABSTRACT

This chapter highlights some of the key trends and issues pertinent to human-machine interfaces (HMI) design in automotive products. For original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), the design of the HMI is an important strategic element of their brand, as it offers many opportunities for differentiation from their competitors. Following a user-centred approach to HMI design is an essential component of most product related design disciplines, including vehicle design. In parallel with the progression of telematics technology, the introduction of low-carbon vehicles is also motivating a lot of product innovation. The introduction of low-carbon vehicles has brought in specific HMI challenges due to novel technology like electric powertrains and charging sockets. For the user, the experience of interacting with the HMI is critical to their satisfaction, and understanding the roles of aesthetics, emotions, and sensorial quality must be considered alongside ease of use and usefulness.
