ABSTRACT

The contemporary case studies chapter provides 21st century examples of school design projects in Africa which show different approaches to school design which have been deployed by the designers of these schools in response to client or other agendas. Examples are taken from West Africa (Dwabor, coastal Ghana), Central Africa (two sites in Rwanda) and South Africa (Khayelitsha township, Cape Town).

These identified case studies are described with a critique which seeks to assess their success or otherwise in providing a relevant and responsive classroom learning space environment for today's learning requirements. This is considered with particular regard to the UN SDG goals which encourage African nations to ensure that access to education amongst poorer groups is increased. This is so as to improve Africa’s global bottom rank in educational provision, and in turn help to improve its other education-linked international development indicators such as child and maternal health nutrition, and improved gender equity.
