ABSTRACT

This chapter considers how public libraries are perceived as a reflection of their buildings, staff and services. Co-location can completely change the image and identity of a public library. In Canada the Working Together Project focused on creating a new image and identity for libraries by changing the language which staff uses to develop relationships with local communities. Idea Stores and Discovery Centres are two brave attempts to break the mould of UK public libraries, reduce barriers and attract a wider range of users. Social barriers exist either in personal terms or because of cultural or community circumstances. Bolton Libraries used innovative consultation methods to find out what the community would like to see in the High Street of the future. Birmingham City Council used community engagement to plan for an innovative signature building to replace the recently demolished Birchfield Library.
