ABSTRACT

This chapter considers the development of holistic collections policies to ensure that library stock reflects the needs of local communities. The local community should be actively engaged in the selection process. The Working Together Project (WTP) also found that it was important to include both the library systems collection development/access team and the community in the selection process. The industrial revolution was at its height and workers had flooded into cities from the surrounding countryside seeking work. The election of New Labour created space for the discussion of issues such as social exclusion, and the topic of libraries as agents of social change rose up the professional agenda. The Tarot Card Art Project involves activities related to planning and designing a deck of tarot cards 'as a basis for users to explore the range of library resources in the area of esoterica'. From a traditional library approach, librarians can continue to select what they view as being the 'best' materials.
