ABSTRACT
In this chapter, I follow McKim Marriott and Gerald Larson in studying Indic traditions through their own categories. Among numerous important terms in Indic traditions, few words can match the ubiquitous presence of the word “dharma” as I will show below. This term has continued to evolve from its origin and today, for millions of Indians, their religiosity and ethics are best expressed in their native vernacular linguistic expressions that are woven around the semantics of “dharma.” So much so that, if I was writing this book in any Indian language, I would have been using the words “Hindu Dharma” rather than “Hinduism Religion” to refer to the Indic traditions.
