ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the foundations of Operational Excellence and points out the kinds of opportunities the digital age offers so that organizations can realize new levels of Operational Excellence. It reflects the management dimensions that firms should consider when they move toward Operational Excellence. Operations are at the core of every organization. They are what organizations do. Operations refer to business processes in and across all functions of an organization. Against this background, Operational Excellence is a key precondition for organizational success. As one of the six major Digital Capabilities, Operational Excellence means out performing competitors by leveraging the potential of new technologies. Many organizations provide similar or identical products. There are many ways a firm can excel, but since operations are what organizations basically do, Operational Excellence is a central capability for any organization that wants to compete, particularly in a digital world.
