ABSTRACT

The two of us share a strong interest in participatory visual methods (PVM) and the process of sharing the results of our research with external audiences. We first met in a research methods class at the University of Massachusetts Boston about 15 years ago. Thus began our complementary and sometimes intersecting journeys to empower young people and adults with brain injury and intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD), among others, to embark on a structured process of reflecting on and communicating their perspectives to peers, case managers, family members, and policy makers and advocating for change. This chapter focuses on two examples of our complementary work and is informed by our years of research and practice in disability studies.
