ABSTRACT

Type 2 Diabetes (T2D), formerly known as non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM), is a serious clinical and public health problem in Canada, the United States, and across the globe. The Canadian Diabetes Association developed the Healthy Workplace Initiative in 2003. This initiative is still viewed as an opportunity to encourage employers and corporations to adopt the principles of comprehensive, workplace health promotion. In the US, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) developed specific guidelines for employers to help them assist their employees with diabetes management. In addition, the new American Diabetes Association clinical practice guidelines published as a supplement in the January 2010 issue of Diabetes Care focus on maintenance of glycaemic control and secondary prevention in the form of screening using the glycosylated haemoglobin in an attempt to prevent onset and further complications/comorbidities from T2D. The Americans with Disabilities Act was amended in 2008 to strengthen the language relation to diabetes.
