Taking to the Streets
With this chapter I wish to move away from the study of specific communities into a wider context. The third area I suggested that it would be possible to hear discourses on religious diversity is in and around street festivals, especially those that have, or are supposed to have, a religious content. There has been a great deal written about festivals of this kind, their organisation and their proposed functions. Nothing that I have found, however, asks the question of the kinds of conversations such events generate among those who attend them, or how the festivals are talked about by individuals going about their daily business away from the festivals themselves. This is going to be my focus in this and the following chapter.
