ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the origins and use of the cosmological symbol of the fountain in relation to creation generally. Then, it finds how water is used to give cosmic significance to Christ. The chapter focuses specifically at how architectural and artistic practices helped preserve a wider understanding of baptism, even as social perceptions narrowed. Finally the chapter suggests that, although recent liturgical revision has indeed opened up a wider range of imaginative possibilities, it is still the case that the work of artists can aid us in exploration of the full range of potential meanings for this symbol. How far the symbol of the fountain is now largely forgotten can be nicely indicated by how few viewers of Hieronymus Bosch's famous painting The Garden of Earthly Delights realise the significance of the fountains that appear in all three parts of the triptych, including the Garden of Eden.
