ABSTRACT

This chapter highlights four out of the numerous positive facets of Jesus's teaching activities in the Synoptic Gospels. The four positive facets are practicing what one teaches; recognising and utilising 'teachable moments'; learning from one's students and teaching for transformation. Practicing what one teaches has to do with authenticity as one seeks to align the interior with the exterior and also affords the student honest respect. Not only does religious education matter, but also the manner in which the religious educator facilitates the teaching and learning process. The Synoptic Jesus is a positive model for religious educators, and an analysis of his teaching activities certainly provokes reflection on how to facilitate religious education. The Synoptic Jesus certainly offers numerous lessons on how to utilise teachable moments that arise spontaneously. The Synoptic Gospels, particularly the Gospels of Matthew and Luke, offer numerous instances of Jesus teaching by means of parables.
