ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on usability, including how usability is defined, how it can be measured and how it can be enhanced through design. It describes a range of international regulations and design guidelines for information systems, warning systems and assistance systems that attempt to promote usability by incorporating best practice, both in design and in the design process. Usability of in-vehicle technology is a key contributor to drivers' acceptance of it. Usability can either be specified or measured as a product quality characteristic in terms of its sub-characteristics, or specified or measured directly by measures that are a subset of quality in use. To explore the relationship between usability and acceptability, it is useful to consider the technology acceptance model. Basic Human Factors principles are established, the rapid development of in-vehicle technology presents a challenge for updating regulations and detailed design guidance.
