ABSTRACT
The concept of a logistics city and achieving this status is becoming recognized as a means of attaining sustained economic growth, as evidenced by a number of examples around the world. This chapter examines some aspects of logistics cities, with a view to proposing how this may also be achieved in Melbourne, Australia. For this purpose, a hierarchical planning framework is proposed by the Institute for Logistics and Supply Chain Management (ILSCM) at Victoria University. This planning framework is seen as necessary for achieving dynamic alignment in the development of infrastructure to be used by the relevant stakeholders. The ultimate progression of a logistics-intensive economy within a region of a country is the multifaceted development of goods movement activities into a Logistics City. Within a Logistics City reside industrial parks that include dedicated infrastructure, strategically located within a Free Trade Zone (FTZ).
