Onthe26th,thewindS.,withsharpsquallsandmore light,sothatthestarsthatstoodintheS.aboutnoonwere quitepaledbythelight.Thisgaveusreasontobelieve, havingcaughtaglimpsetowardstheS.W.,thattheremust beanopening.Ithereforesentoutfivemen,armedwith lancesandfirelocks,toexaminethesame.Onarriving intheW.,atsomedistancepastthereef,theysawtwo bears,theonenotsixhandshigh,theothersomewhat bigger.Theytookaimatthem;butastheyseparated, andthepowderwasblownoutofthepanondrawingthe trigger,theypursuedthebearswiththeirlances.These madeofftowardsthebay,whichwasonlycoveredwith loosesnow,sothatthebearswerecontinuallybreaking throughit.ThementhenobservedthattheWestBay wasmostlyopen;thattheycould,indeed,seenomore thanacrustoficeinthesaidbay;fromwhichweconcludedthat,since(asmentionedabove)wecouldhearthe roarofthebreakers,theremustalsobeanopening'near theWestBay,orBee-hive.1Theiceheretnustmelt quicklyfromthebottom,seeingthatforsometimepast wehavehadmostlycoldwinds,withfrost.Withregard totheNorthBay,wecouldnotobserveanyopening there;butintheeventofthewindremaining,asnow, forsomelengthoftimeinthisquarter,anopeningmight chancetooccurthereearly,whichGodgrant!In returning,weobservedthatthebearshadclaweduptnuch rock-weedandbigleaves2onthestrand;andthat,to
