ABSTRACT

This chapter reviews the evaluation process of e-learning instruction system design (ISD), including: the difference between formative and summative evaluation, connoisseur-based, decision-oriented, objectives-based formative evaluation approaches. Formative evaluations provide insight into a course for instructional designers, so that improvements can be made before the course is finalized. Summative evaluations are conducted after e-learning has been delivered to learners, to determine whether or not training was effective. The connoisseur-based studies are meant to analyze the e-learning program and are not good predictors of how students will respond to training. The purpose of decision-oriented studies is to help instructional designers organize and design the content of training so that it is well suited to the learners. The learning evaluation is meant to identify changes in learner knowledge, skill, or attitude as a result of training. The Return on investment (ROI) formula first determines the total dollar value associated with the benefits of e-learning.
