This introduction presents an overview of key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book provides an introduction to exciting new forms of dialogue among Muslims, Muslim women, in particular, who have chosen to commit themselves to transnational conversations and actions about the status of women in Islam. Without downplaying the dissonance that still surrounds this topic or the high stakes for participants, it sought to convey something of the intellectual excitement and the spirit of possibility that emerges when persons with genuine differences in worldview and conditioning come together for open and honest dialogue, and in the process enter into sustained relationships through conferences, strategic use of the internet, and collaborative projects. Although tensions between transnational Islamic revivalism and secular nationalisms have generated considerable commentary, and the practical utility of transnational networking has been recognized, emergent trends toward transnational dialogue about the standing of women in Islamic societies remain largely unexplored.
