ABSTRACT

Consejo de Portugal—Benito Maciel Parente, who is captain of the fort on the Pará situated in the mouth of the river Amazon, gives notice of having rebuilt it on a suitable site, and that he had left off finishing the work for lack of the materials which he had requested, reminding that whoever should go to succeed him must take them out. The Consejo is of the opinion that, the suspicion having been confirmed that foreigners were fortifying themselves in the mouth of the river Amazon on the north shore to which discovery went Luis Araña de Vasconselos who has not returned, it is very important to discuss the remedy with the greatest dispatch, before delay and neglect make it more difficult. Amongst the Irish were 4 good scholars and latinists who resolved to bring the knowledge of God to the Indians, who had no religion nor did they worship anything as a god or idol.
