ABSTRACT
The Muspratt family through three generations left an important legacy across many areas of British public, business and professional life, reflecting the broadening opportunities provided by national legislation, local initiatives and family entrepreneurship over the period from the 1820s to the 1930s. James, his sons Sheridan, Richard, Edmund and his grandson Max all rose to the challenges alongside other well-known families, such as the Gladstones and the Rathbones, to use their time, experience and best efforts for the benefit of different communities at both national and local levels. This determined, tireless and sustained commitment was a family characteristic borne of that adventurous spirit with which the Muspratt name has become so closely associated. Many of the buildings and institutions bearing association with the family have remained to the present day as part of their legacy.
