ABSTRACT

The United Nation (UN) General Assembly declared on 28 July 2010 that safe and clean drinking water and sanitation is a human right essential to the full enjoyment of life and all other human rights. Inclusion of access to clean water in the Millennium Development Goals (MDG) shows the significance with which the global community accords sanitation and hygiene in the developing world. The Congressional Research Service shows that there is a link between the time spends looking for water or use of unsafe water and poverty. According to Kenya's Vision 2030, the government's development blueprint, only 57 per cent of households in Kenya have access to water that is 'considered safe'. The Swedish government is cited as having signed a credit agreement with the Kenya Government in 1970 to assist also in rural water supply and perhaps to support the earlier initiative of the World Health Organization (WHO) and United Nations Children's Emergency Fund (UNICEF).
