ABSTRACT

On 7 April 1523 Brother Thomas of Ganget gave Zorzi an account of his journey from Barara to Jerusalem, ‘speaking quite fluently’ in Italian or Latin. Ganget is said (f. 44) to have been in Angot, but I have not located it. The Iter actually starts at Ugie which was 6 days (say 60 to 80 miles at most) from Barara and situated on the river Auas (Hawash); it proceeds by Barara, Bedevegi, Vasel, Aich, Urvuar (Lalibela) and across the provinces of Bugna and Tegre to Axon; thence by Divarva and Bisen to Mesua (Massawa) and Soachen, and then by sea to Mount Sinai and Jerusalem (Fig. 17). The Iter is followed by a long and interesting amplification in which Brother Thomas gives further details, especially about the southern lands.
