ABSTRACT

Evolutionary psychology (EP) seeks to bring an evolutionary approach and understanding to human behavior. From this perspective, all behavior can ultimately be understood as the result of natural selection and adaptation. Indeed, evolutionary psychology is being touted by some as the new paradigm for psychological science, bringing the disparate fields of current psychology under the umbrella of an evolutionary worldview. Altruism has received so much attention in EP because it seems to go against natural selection. The beginning point for an EP account of sexual behavior, monogamy and parenting is the difference between males and females in terms of mating opportunity and parental investment. Some contemporary theologians have considered the implications of EP for important concepts within Christian theology. The universality of religion, according to E. O. Wilson and other proponents of evolutionary psychology, is a product of the evolved human brain and mind.
