ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book takes up the challenging task of assimilating Computational art into traditional art historiography. It opens up a new perspective and uncovers a new level of understanding of the intricacies of media art, to reveal facets of the creative process that helped to shape its history. The book looks at the way concrete poetry, logic, computation and programming played a crucial role in Edmonds' early artistic career as both inspiration and tools. It focuses on the innovative media, new technology and new software methods that Edmonds invented in order to advance the developments in his art practice. The book examines Edmonds' role as an innovator of new technologies and approaches for art. It shows how a deep involvement in the research and development of the new medium became an integral part of the development of his art practice employing that medium.
