ABSTRACT

Artists are rarely mere "users" of the tools and technologies that they employ. Adaptation and invention of the media employed is often a key element of their creative process. This chapter explores the innovative digital media, new technology and new software methods that Ernest Edmonds invented in order to advance the developments in his art practice. The chapter shows how a deep involvement in research on, and improvement of, the new medium became an integral part of the development of his art practice employing that medium. The topics discussed include a number of subjects in computing technology that are now considered standard practice, but were novel at the time Edmonds introduced them. For ease of reading, topics are divided into two groups. The first group is concerned with the major advances in innovative media that Edmonds has developed over the years. The second group focuses on specific advances that helped Edmonds evolve his most recent interactive time-based artworks.
