ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the strategic drivers for the design and development of learning spaces in higher education. There is a number of strategic drivers for developing and enhancing learning spaces within higher education (HE) providers. These include: student expectations, student experience, and competitive advantage over other institutions with the marketisation of higher education. The Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment (CABE) found that the quality of building design had a positive impact on staff and students' decisions to work, or study, at their chosen HE provider. The research evidences the links between building design, and recruitment, retention and performance of both staff and students in higher education. As HE providers grow their academic portfolio to meet market demand, and increase their student numbers, there will be greater demands placed on the available estate. Consideration will need to be given to how existing learning spaces can best be utilised to meet varied disciplinary needs.
