ABSTRACT

Masculinities theories explain that the norms governing how men behave perpetuate male-gendered social constructs (McGinley 2004: 368-70). These theories typically expose how masculinities narratives and behaviours sustain white, male hegemony. They also explain how individuals in subordinated positions utilize similar narratives to distinguish themselves from females (McGinley 2004: 364). In the subordination narratives, even though men have low status, they still maintain positions above women in a hierarchical structure.3 After conducting a study of residential construction workers in Las Vegas, we observed this dynamic in the case of Latino immigrant workers, who are increasingly segregated into low-wage workplaces.
