ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a case study in South Carolina on the challenge of father-daughter succession in family business. Mary Ann's Deli provides a useful example of a case which can help to expand the under-researched intersection of gender and family business. Despite the tremendous importance of family businesses and women's leadership in the United States economy, little is known about the unique issues surrounding women in family firms. The chapter illuminates this arena by exploring a case of father-daughter succession in the family firm. Family businesses have a special culture that makes them different from other types of businesses. Women in the US have been increasingly starting their own businesses over the past ten years, but they are still less likely to start a business than a man. Despite their increasing level of business ownership and education, income of female entrepreneurs still lags that of male owners.
