The challenges

These practices have resulted in a number of key and heavily interlinked challenges, including the energy, water and food security issues and the pollution and climate change that have resulted from a growth model based upon a linear economy (Bizikova et al., 2013; Blowfield, 2013), and an additional challenge – probably the one which governments and businesses organizations are the most accountable for – that of continued ‘absolute poverty’, an increase in social inequity (O’Riordan, 2012; Doppelt, 2012; Blowfield, 2013; Robertson, 2014) and the persistence of corrupt governance.
