ABSTRACT

CR: You said, in one of our earlier conversations, that the influence of your father’s background – religious and from mountain country – didn’t show itself while you were growing up. Then, in 1936, you composed your first religious work, the first in a long series of important works. So was it the case that your inheritance from your father began to make itself felt in you at this time, or was the composition of this series of works due to external, entirely accidental reasons? Commissions, maybe? And first of all, are you religious?
