ABSTRACT

CR: We’ve now made a general tour of yourself and your music. We’ve been able to note a whole series of different aspects. All the same, if we look at it overall, it seems quite possible, without reducing these aspects to a common denominator, to make at least some kind of synthesis and to suggest that you embrace, as it were, two poles of attraction – that’s to say two opposite poles – at each of which we find a dominant trait of what I could call the essential Poulenc. And it would appear that certain works more than others are more completely representative of these two poles. Tell me if I’m wrong, but it seems to me that, on one side, we can place Le Bal masqué and Les Mamelles de Tirésias, and on the other side the group formed by the Mass, the Motets, the Petites prières and the Stabat Mater.
