ABSTRACT

During Lully-Rameau performances of his operas he almost always occupied a small loge, but he would always stay concealed as best he could, sometimes even lying down. Rameau's personality was even more cruel within his family. He declared to his daughter that he did not wish her to marry and that she would have to wait until after his death. Rameau has died at a great age: he was over 80. He was a hard-hearted man and very unpleasant to live with, and his personality was as oafish as it was unfair. His wish was to compose the music, and to that end he turned everything into ballets, dances and symphonies; everything was situated in sea ports, and he could never abide scenes of dialogue. Lully knew just as well how to mount an opera production and command its performers as he did to compose one.
