ABSTRACT

As discussed in Chapter 7, with the rise of contemporary gestational-surrogacy arrangements, surrogacy has recently re-emerged as a hot-button issue. Surrogacy arrangements have increasingly received much attention from the media, academics, and organizations such as bioethics and feminist groups. Most of the focus is on surrogacy arrangements in lower-resource countries, such as India, although the United States is also a popular global surrogacy destination (Bromfield & Rotabi, 2014). Markens (2007) has noted that much of the media attention on surrogacy has been sensationalized and politicized. Numerous articles and reports have recently been published on surrogacy, with some activists calling for a ban on surrogacy worldwide (Damelio & Sorensen, 2008), the primary motivation being the protection of women who work as surrogates as well as a concern for child rights. For the full-length article on the study discussed in this chapter see Bromfield (2016).
