ABSTRACT

Walter Kranz published a brief review paper in 1937 on the Kaalijärv Crater on the Estonian island of Saaremaa in the Baltic Sea. This is a recent impact site, possibly some 2,400 years old. The first published interpretations of the Estonian craters as meteorite craters were by Ivan Reinwaldt. Ivan Reinwaldt, an Estonian mining engineer, had been sent to Saaremaa to prospect for gypsum and salt as well as to investigate the origin of the craters. Kraus obtained his qualification for professorship from the Technical University in Munich. Kranz had been inspired to write his Kaalijärv paper by the famous Austrian geologist Eduard Sueb. Sueb's son, Franz Eduard Sueb was also interested in the impact phenomenon. From 1908 to 1910 he was Professor of Geology at the Technical University of Prague and later became Professor of Geology at the University of Vienna until his retirement in 1938.
