ABSTRACT

Reviewers speak of feeling emotional and very moved, particularly upon seeing footage of Brassens performing which is projected in the final section of the exhibition. This is particularly evident in the establishment of the Fondazione Fabrizio De Andre and the Centro Interdipartimentale di Studi Fabrizio de Andre at the University of Siena. But De Andre has also been the subject of more popular forms of commemoration, including museum exhibitions and television programmes, as we might expect, given the emphasis placed on audience engagement by the canzone d'autore discourse. Indeed, Fazio explained that 'abbiamo deciso di far parlare le canzoni stasera, invece delle persone', suggesting that the only way to access the 'real' De Andre is to listen to his songs. Such terminology echoes that of the rhetoric surrounding the canzone d'autore and thus illustrates the extent to which: firstly, the persona of 'De Andre, the cantautore legend' is constructed according to the constitutive discourse of the genre.
