ABSTRACT

This chapter considers the ways in which the two singer-songwriters express their own forms of impegno. Rather, the fact that Gaber looks to and then adopts Brel's approach to political themes would seem to further illustrate Daniele Ionio Prevignano's analysis of the relationship of chanson to the canzone d'autore as analysed in. It tests the extent to which this applies in the next section, by considering the performances of the two singer-songwriters as a way of determining whether other types of influence are in fact present in this Brel-Gaber relationship. Gaber is described as the proponent of the teatro canzone, that is, the infusion of a performative aspect within the world of song. The performances which analyses here come from the Giorgio Gaber box-set released by the Parole e canzoni series.
