ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to study the intra-household allocation of resources by gender. 1 Our interest in resource allocation within families stems from two facts: families were the main mediators between individual access to resources and all other institutions, and families have traditionally been seen as egalitarian units. Our interest is in consumption as the result of previous differences (for instance, women being granted less food because they are considered less needy or worthy), and as the origin of new differentials (for instance, women suffering from poorer health or shorter height than men because they are underfed).
