ABSTRACT

This chapter describes some of the women's journeys to safety and their situation in the refugee camps and towns as they resettled in Iran and Turkey. It explores the refugees' escape journeys in the snow as they walked the tough mountains to the border of Iran and were then transported by Iranian vehicles to safety. Civilians are more likely to be granted asylum in Iran. Iran and Turkey are signatories to the UN convention on refugees. Non-Europeans can only have temporary asylum in Turkey and it is the responsibility of the UNHCR to find more durable solutions for them. The main difference between refugees and internally displaced people is that internally displaced people (IDP's), unlike refugees, do not cross national borders even if they have fled their homes because of conflict, violence, and human rights abuses. The situation of Anfal IDPs was different from many others in the world.
