ABSTRACT

The contemporary pattern of migration is complex and challenging, taking many different courses due to the influence of globalisation and decolonisation. There are an estimated 214 million migrants in the world. Refugees, asylum seekers, undocumented migrants and internally displaced persons are currently the main focus of discourse. Remittances, money sent back home, by migrants are estimated to reach US$414 billion, with that sent to developing countries estimated at three times the size of official development aid.1
