ABSTRACT
This chapter focuses on the dominant academic and political debates about lone
motherhood in Britain and Germany. These debates are particularly relevant as
they make sense of social relationships whilst reflecting and influencing how lone
mothers are positioned in society. Moreover, the dominance of a particular discourse
in a national context may affect how the situation of lone motherhood is understood
within each country.
