ABSTRACT

In this chapter, I shall deal mainly with job interviews, but you can easily relate what you learn to any one-to-one interview, such as with a supplier or client. In the case of a job appraisal, you will probably know the other person well, and may also have knowledge of meta programs and other useful characteristics – or you can identify them prior to an appraisal or similar important meeting (see Chapter 15). ‘First impressions’ only happen once, of course, so this factor will apply in most job interviews. But even this high-speed, intuitive phenomenon depends on the nuances of body language, voice and the factors of rapport and ‘perceived likeness’ covered in Chapters 6 and 7, so the communication principles fit specialized forms of communication such as these very well.
