ABSTRACT

Hans Hollein’s work is of interest to us today because it expanded the concept of architecture beyond the realm of building. This chapter discusses his idea that architecture had become a form of media. Hollein’s 1960s projects tended to be collages, exhibitions or commissions for small Viennese boutiques – including his iconic 1964 image of the aircraft carrier in the landscape and his design for the Retti candle shop. By 1965, Hollein had become a co-editor of Bau magazine, and he used this publication to bring his ideas and projects to a wider audience that included Archigram and Architectural Design in Britain.
