ABSTRACT

We initially analysed the issue of how Russians perceive the phenomena of health and sickness through our interview materials, and then also using the RLMS panRussian survey data. In the interviews, many respondents highlighted a special intermediate state lying between health and sickness and opposed to both of them. They mentioned it several times in the open interviews; yet this state has never been defined as qualitatively special in Russian culture, and there is not even an adequate term for it in the Russian language, a fact that was also reflected in the way respondents themselves described this state.
