ABSTRACT

Indonesia's health care system has been going through many changes in the last few decades, starting with the Soekarno era to the new order era to the reformation era. Soekarno was very active in improving the health of Indonesians through national policies and partnerships with other countries. The provision of health care in Indonesia is in close spirit of what is elaborated in the Sistem Kesehatan Nasional. Public health insurance plays an important role in the financing of health care provision in Indonesia, especially considering that many Indonesians are considered poor by World Bank's or its own national definition; the schemes will reduce out-of-pocket spending. Issues related to the recording and sharing of health records among health institutions across the country are crucial to be dealt with well to complement the successful implementation of universal health coverage. The country boasts rich natural resources in both land and in water and has a strategic geographical location.
