In the summer of 2005, a mystery briefly attracts the international media. On the Isle of Sheppey, a distressed man is found walking along the beach in wet clothes, as if he’s come out of the sea. Mute and confused, he’s taken to a local psychiatric facility. A BBC television news presenter shows a picture of a young, blond man and asks, ‘Does anyone know who he is?’ Nothing helps identify him; even his clothes have had their labels removed. Captioned ‘The Mystery Man’, his story is avidly followed by people around the world.
