ABSTRACT

We have discussed various technologies that are now, or shortly will be, present in modern-day cars. Using aviation as the paradigm case, we can now see how these technologies might offer a range of benefits, but also how they could potentially create significant problems. The key determinant in terms of whether the impacts of in-vehicle technologies are positive or negative is the extent to which human factors knowledge and methods are used in the design process. To demonstrate this, the next part of the book focuses on what we know about driving, what else human factors can tell us about the driving task and how to support rather than hinder it.
