ABSTRACT

Our senses are the means by which we obtain information about the world around us, which impact how we live and work. The chapter provides an overview of how the main senses function and discusses the theories that describe how sensory information from the senses is processed. It also explains the different approaches to measuring the senses and highlights important concepts in the measurement of the different senses. Measurement of the senses is an important part of the research and development of technologies that seek to aid our sensing and accommodate the limitations of our senses. The examples in the chapter demonstrate the application of such research in the areas of holographic displays and human–robot teaming. Lastly, the chapter provides a summary of the expected direction of future research as well as some potential challenges in this research area.
