Violence, Crime and Safety
The preceding chapters have shown the contribution of the matatu industry to accessibility, employment and the overall socio-economic life in Kenya. While these benefits are important, showing creativity and entrepreneurship, there is a negative side to the matatu industry that we cannot deny. The matatu industry has been associated with violence, crime and insecurity, often leading to the sector being perceived negatively by the public. We are not necessarily saying that the matatu vehicle itself generates crime, violence and insecurity. Rather, the environment in and around the matatu industry is used by people to commit crime and cause insecurity.
